Why everybody should want to work for a technology company

People Working at a Technology Company

The number of technology jobs continues to grow. There are more than 11.8 million jobs in the technology space nationwide, according to the Computing Technology Industry Association’s Cyberstates 2019 report.

It’s a reversal from a few decades ago, and today, technology jobs account for 7.6 percent of the nation’s workforce, adding roughly 1.9 million new jobs since 2010. Today, the technology industry has an estimated $1.8 trillion direct economic impact, which is approximately 10 percent of the nation’s economy.

Most estimates predict the number of jobs in this sector, including engineering jobs and information technology jobs, is likely to grow in the decade ahead. The trend is clear, and it’s not hard to see why.

Bold ideas are the norm

To develop new technology, employees must be bold in their thinking. The world recently paused to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Bold thinking and the development of new technologies made the moment possible. One solution they created was supercomputing, which opened the door to countless innovations since.

Today, private technology companies deliver bold thinking. Private companies are launching satellites into orbit, and they are developing the communications platforms that are connecting every corner of the globe. Private tech companies are building solutions that allow technology to improve our lives.

Make the world of tomorrow

Technology companies, by their nature, are all about change, and their business is working to change tomorrow. Employees of technology companies are on the front lines of developing the tools and technology that will drive future innovation.

Fifty years ago, it was hard to imagine a world where anyone could buy a personal computer. Twenty-five years ago, it was difficult to imagine a world where we could carry a device in our pocket, allowing instantaneous communication with anyone in the world.

Just think about the technology that no one has yet imagined.

Be as creative as possible

Developing new technology requires creative thinking. Legacy systems and approaches hamstring many companies that operate in more traditional industries, but technology companies take a decidedly different approach.

For technology companies, creative thinking isn’t just a talking point; it’s a way of life, and businesses in the space must think outside the box to remain relevant. As such, there is no comprehensive roadmap, opening the door to creative thinking.

Many companies talk about the importance of creativity and try to develop a workspace that enables creativity. But creativity isn’t contingent on a physical workspace; it’s driven by the tasks at hand and the opportunity to innovate.

Endless opportunities

Because technology is continuously evolving and impacts every industry, organizations are continually looking for the next crop of talent. The good news for job seekers is companies need top talent in every department and geography.

Today, 45% of Gen Z and Millennials want to work in technology, according to a survey from Future Workplace and Randstad US.

Not every role at a technology company requires specialized skills, such as development experience. As technology continues to permeate our daily lives, the number of people needed to power these companies will continue to grow. The opportunities of tomorrow are at technology companies.

Be yourself

Publications often praise technology companies for their diverse personalities of their team members or the perks of the job. It’s not that companies seek to hire exciting characters. Instead, technology companies allow team members to be themselves and contribute their ideas.

Technology companies often provide workplaces that are conducive to creative thinking. They are breaking the mold of traditional work, from the spaces to the hours.

Every day is fun at a technology company when you’ve an endless opportunity to ideate and contribute ideas, but that does not mean the work is easy. Nothing worthwhile is easy, and working at a technology company is a worthy and rewarding experience.
